The car overturned but the driver got out and fled the scene.

Witnesses have told police the Toyota Yaris was speeding.

The man, 42, was arrested after handing himself into Flemington police station at about 3pm.

Senior Sergeant Steve Rosewarne, of Knox Highway Patrol, said two mobile phones were left in the wreckage of the Toyota.

“We have gone to the registered owner’s address,” Snr Sgt Rosewarne said.

“We have a strong lead. We would urge the driver to come forward.”

Snr Sgt Rosewarne said it was “callous” to leave a badly-injured person following an accident.

“He didn’t know whether he had killed or injured somebody, he just left the scene,” he said.

“The maximum sentence for leaving the scene of an accident where somebody is injured is five years.

“From what witnesses have said there was extreme speed.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision, has information about the driver, or has dashcam footage, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
