A Maribyrnong warehouse fire destroying several cars and sending plumes of smoke billowing into the air this morning is being treated as suspicious.

The blaze caused extensive smoke damage to the Kingcon construction company building on Williamson Rd.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade incident controller Craig Williams said the site was empty when the fire started just before 5.30am.

Three or four cars parked inside were engulfed in flames, the MFB said.

The 50m by 80m warehouse blaze — between Bunnings warehouse and a Caltex service station — is being treated as suspicious.

The building is heavily smoke logged and a community warning has been issued for smoke in the area.

Mr Williams said the 44 firefighters on the scene did well to stop it from spreading to the highly flammable businesses either side of the warehouse.

The fire was brought under control by 6.30am.

Crews were expected to be there most of the morning inspecting the site, Mr Williams said.

“We’ll go in and have a bit more of an investigation into how it started,” he said.

“It takes a long time to sift through the ashes and find what it is (that started the fire).”

The number 82 tram route which runs along Williamson Rd was temporarily blocked because of the blaze, while buses were forced to make detours.

No one was injured.
