AFL great Mark 'Bomber' Thompson granted bail

MARK Bomber Thompson has been a “person of interest” to police for at least 121 days — but now his fingerprints are all over the detective’s case against him.

Inside his Port Melbourne home officers discovered drugs, including ice, amphetamines and ecstasy.

A day before police raided Mr Thompson’s property in January, police pulled over Karl “Bang Bang” Holt in his Mercedes bearing the licence plates “ONBA1L”.

Mr Holt — who has long links to the Bandidos outlaw motorcycle gang — and girlfriend Katia Drcec were found with more than 100g of methamphetamine, an ice pipe and $2380 in cash.

A further raid at Mr Holt’s mother’s Mill Park home turned up a semiautomatic handgun, more drugs and almost $20,000.

The pair’s business partner, Thomas Windsor, a Rebels bikie affiliate, and Mr Holt had been living at Mr Thompson’s home for some time.

According to the former AFL coach and player, Mr Holt and Mr Windsor moved in and he couldn’t get them out and it wasn’t a standard tenancy arrangement.

But in court this week, police told the magistrate a signed rental agreement was found on a kitchen table, indicating Mr Windsor was paying $300 weekly to live at Mr Thompson’s home.

It was the bust on the man known as “Bang Bang” and ongoing surveillance of his activities that led police to raid Mr Thompson’s property. Plainclothes and uniformed officers rammed two entrances at the Rouse St address on January 5.

Divisional Response Unit detective Naomi Bourke stunned Geelong Magistrates’ Court this week, when she revealed what police allegedly found in Mr Thompson’s home.

His fingerprints were found on drugs stashed in his bedroom and on a package containing ice and amphetamines, in a mezzanine area.

Inside his locked bedroom, police allege, digital scales, clear resealable bags and Xanax tablets, alongside ecstasy tablets and ice pipes, were also found.

The court was also told Mr Thompson had paid for the Budget rental car Mr Windsor was driving at the time of his arrest.

Notes recording “large amounts of money transactions” between Mr Thompson and Mr Windsor, are also part of the case, police told a magistrate.

Officers tracked Mr Windsor down at Mr Holt’s Lara home the same day of the Port Melbourne swoop.

Windsor, 28, has been charged with several counts of trafficking commercial quantities of amphetamine and ice, as well as trafficking ecstasy. But in dispute, his lawyers say, is the police case of who was in possession of the drugs seized.

Police had interviewed Thompson and for more than three months he was just considered a “person of interest”.

But that changed on Tuesday when he was charged with drug offences and taken into a jail cell.

Despite fears Thompson could use his yacht and his fortune to flee Australia, Reserve Magistrate Leonard Brear granted Thompson bail.

The cop case against Thompson took 80-minutes to detail. But Thompson only said two words during the hearing: “Yes sir,” when asked if he understood conditions of his bail.
