A shocking road rage incident saw two Berwick men chase each other in their cars for 50km across Melbourne — from Tullamarine to Glen Waverley — before one was stabbed in front of his child and partner at a police station.

Glen Waverley Sergeant Janine Saunders said the incident had baffled police, who were still piecing together the series of events that started at 8pm last night.

“They are blaming each other,” she said.

“We’re a bit perplexed as to how you can keep that anger going … to end up in a fist fight out the front of the police station.”

The drivers were aged 54 and 27.

The younger driver, who was stabbed in the arm and leg when the two cars arrived at Glen Waverley police station after being directed there by a triple-0 operator, had his wife and child, aged 3, in their Nissan Navara throughout the ordeal.

As they were driving towards Glen Waverley, one of the cars allegedly sideswiped the other in the Burnley Tunnel, escalating tensions.

The woman jumped from the car when they got to Glen Waverley, with police stopping the fight within a minute of their arrival.

The younger man was rushed to the Alfred, while the older man suffered facial injuries and was taken to the Dandenong Hospital.

Both men were tested for drugs and alcohol in hospital.

“I think it would be a terrifying experience for anyone,” Sgt Saunders said.

“Hopefully that child is young enough not to realise what was going on.”

Police believe the older man had a knife in his car for work.

MORE LAW AND ORDER

Despite being from the same suburb, the two men were not known to each other.

Police are yet to lay charges.

Both men were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators want to speak with anyone who saw either car on the Tullamarine or Monash Freeways, or the two vehicles in the Burnley Tunnel.

Police are also asking for dashcam or CCTV footage that may have captured the cars between the initial incident at 8pm and when they arrived at the police station six suburbs away at 8.40pm.

Melburnians were encouraged to remain calm while driving.

“Take a deep breath, calm down and drive away,” Sergeant Saunders said. “If the other party doesn’t, attend your local police station.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with further information or dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
