Rail workers discover body inside bag under Altona bridge
Detectives have descended on a creek south of the Melbourne CBD where workers earlier today made a grisly discovery.
Railway workers made a grisly discovery shortly after lunchtime today at a creek in Altona North where its believed the remains of a human body were dumped.
The workers stumbled upon a bag at the site about 13km south of the Melbourne CBD about 12pm. It’s believed the remains were inside the bag.
Police have been tight lipped, but news crews filmed detectives scouring the creek and using ladders to look at the under side of a bridge over the creek.
A two-line statement from Victoria Police said the remains are believed to be human and that they will be forensically examined.
Police will later compare their findings with the missing person’s register to try and identify who the body belongs to.
Nine reports that as police were combing the scene, a grass fire broke out that is being treated as suspicious.
