AN elderly man who was fatally stabbed at a home in Meadow Heights was in a relationship with a younger woman who lived at the property, neighbours say. Another man died in a stabbing at Heidelberg Heights after an apparent dispute with a housemate.

Fatih Kaya said he was friends with the young woman arrested and was “shocked and saddened” by the incident.

“It’s terrible, I feel sorry for (her), she was such a troubled soul, and I feel bad for the (victim) too,” he said.

Mr Kaya said he saw the pair most days.

“(The father) would give me cigarettes and I’d help them out with things like tuning in their TV set,” he said.

Mr Kaya said the relationship between the elderly victim and the young woman seemed unusual and left neighbours feeling uneasy.

Waleed, who asked for his surname to be withheld, said he saw the 26-year-old woman most days and was stunned to hear she was in custody.

“She is always walking up and down the street and when she sees me she asks for cigarettes or for $2,” he said.

“I’ve seen her boyfriend before and he is very old.”

Waleed said the block of units was notorious for loud and disruptive behaviour by residents.

“We always hear shouting and yelling, you never know what’s going on in there... But never something like this,” he said.

Homicide Squad detectives are probing the small red-brick unit which is at the back of a block of seven units.

In Heidelberg Heights a man died after an apparent dispute with his housemate.

Emergency services found a 48-year-old man with stab wounds when they arrived at a Southern Rd, home about 12.50am today.

Paramedics were unable to revive him and he died at the scene.

The two men were the only people in the house at the time of the incident, police said.

Detective Sergeant Steve Sheahan said a friend of the Heidelberg Heights victim raised the alarm after hearing shouting.

Det-Sgt Sheahan said the victim was stabbed with an edged weapon.

A knife was found in the front yard of the house this morning.

Police forensic teams remain at the scene, which has been described as “complex”.

The street was the scene of a grisly murder-suicide in 2011 in which a mother killed her three children and burnt down their home.

A neighbour, who asked not to be identified, said this morning’s incident reminded her of the 2011 murders.

She was woken up after her grandson heard police sirens.

“It’s a quiet street, we’ve had nothing here since (2011), it’s scary,” she said.

Neighbour Peter Stewart said the street was normally very safe and he was shocked to wake up to a police cordon.
