Brawl spills onto Chapel St

A bucks party on Chapel Street went wild with a reveller allegedly bashing bystanders with a cricket bat he had stolen froma child in a 7-Eleven store.

Police were last night investigating the South Yarra brawl, which broke out after a man and a woman allegedly heckled a groupof men who were drinking at Bridie O’Reilly’s Irish pub.

Footage of the incident, which happened on Saturday evening, was posted online today.

Witnesses said that the pair was “mouthing off and yelling” to the men.

“The guys that were having the bucks obviously told them to leave and when they were leaving they were mouthing off and yellingand screaming,” a Chapel St shop owner said.

“Next thing you know, one of the guys goes nuts.

“He pinched a cricket bat from a little kid in 7-Eleven and charged them … swinging at an old guy.”

The shop owner, who did not want his name printed out of fear of retribution, said that was when the men leapt over the barrierfrom Bridie O’Reilly’s onto the street.

“Something fuelled the fire and they’ve gone apes---,” he said.

“The two wanted a beating and they copped a beating. They started it.”

Police confirmed a man was punched in the face by an unknown man at the pub, before the offender returned with a cricket batand hit another man.

A 65-year-old Ascot Vale man was struck by the bat and sustained minor injuries.

The man wielding the bat then ran towards Malvern Rd before hailing a taxi near the corner of Simmons St.

He was believed to have a cut above his right eye.

The all-out brawl, captured by a passer-by in a car, spilt onto the street in front of shoppers and diners after startingat the pub.

In the footage, a man in a light shirt was set upon by at least five other men who were seen punching, pushing and chasinghim along the street and into passing traffic.

Another young man ended up being attacked while he lay on the ground on the street between parked cars and moving vehicles.

At least three women were caught up in the shocking incident.

When the violence broke out, a woman carrying a baby ran into nearby furniture store and the store manager put the shop onlockdown.

“People rushed into the store,” a West Elm attendant said.

“He had the doors shut until he thought it was safe and people weren’t going to be hit by a crazy man with a baseball bat.”

Erinn McAlpine was changing the jewellery in the window at nearby boutique Jolie & Dean when the fight erupted.

“He had a cricket bat and it looked like he was trying to hit someone,” she said.

“I thought: ‘Should I look the door? Who is this guy? Is he going to come down the street?’”

Paramedics treated a man in his 20s with cuts to his head and a woman in her 20s.
