Ascot Vale mother of three Kellie McElligott, who suffers from ovarian cancer, said she found the cowardly thugs searching for car keys in the kitchen of her St Leonards Rd home about 4.30am.
It’s believed the thieves broke into the house through a back door.
The young offenders made off with keys to a ute, allegedly mistaking them for keys to the mother’s Mercedes parked in the front driveway.
The frail mother mustered enough strength to chase the thieves down the street.
It’s understood the youths then broke into another house in Essendon only an hour later.
Police believe the two males broke into a Lorraine St house about 5.30am.
“Various items were alleged to have been stolen including phones, purses and the occupant’s vehicle which they drove off in,” Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said.
As the alleged offenders drove off in a stolen Holden, the victim’s son managed to track the vehicle using the Find My iPhone app and police were able to arrest the pair in Collingwood.
A 17-year-old male and a 15-year-old male were charged with home invasion and theft of motor vehicle.
Both have been remanded to appear in a children’s court at a later date.
