The cameras deliver real-time information to the train control centre, where Metro works with police to improve responses to serious network disruptions and incidents.

They are is also used to detect trespassing, graffiti and criminal damage to rail equipment.

Intelligence sourced from the cameras is provided to Victoria Police to support ongoing investigations.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the drones would help fight crime on the railways.

“The use of drones are another tool to better respond to disruptions and catch the criminals who seek to deface our network,” Ms Allan said.

“This is all about making sure our passengers can get to and from Melbourne’s major events quickly and safely.”
