Cop-bashing thug who boasted of playing ‘race card’ released from prison

Yak Dut called police racist pigs and boasted that he could get away with anything in Victoria because of his skin colour. Today the thug was released from prison after beating two policewomen so severely one feared she was going to die.

A young cop basher who bragged he’d get away with savagely beating two policewomen because he was black was released from prison today.

Yak Dut, 22, left the two officers hospitalised then threatened to hunt them down and kill them with their own guns after his arrest.

He told police: “I will get away with anything because I’m black. I will play the race card.”

The Kenyan born man said he was confident he wouldn’t spend a day behind bars because no Victorian magistrate would lock him up because of his skin colour.

County Court judge Wendy Wilmoth today sentenced Dut to 12 months imprisonment, but he will be released from prison today because of time already served.

Dut spent 18 months having been locked up after his arrest for the February 2018 attack.

He must now undergo a two year community corrections order.

Under the terms of the order Dut will remain under supervision and must perform 150 hours of unpaid community work and undergo treatment for alcohol abuse and programs to reduce the risk of his reoffending.

Judge Wilmoth said a community corrections order could only imposed on sentences not longer than 12 months.

She told Dut the order was “essential for your successful rehabilitation”.

Dut sparked a pursuit after he refused to pull over when police tried to intercept him after he was seen driving around Melbourne’s northeast.

He led police to his home then set upon them with a flurry of kicks and punches.

One of his victims said she thought she was going to die after being kicked in the head by Dut.

She fell to the ground where he continued to kick her but was able to jump to her feet after Dut reached for her gun.

The policewomen had to use capsicum spray to gain control after they suffered injuries to their head, neck and body during the violent attack.

Both policewomen were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

It took four officers to bring Dut under control.

He told police they were all “pigs” and “racist c....” and claimed he had been targeted because he was black.

Dut pleaded guilty to two counts each of intentionally causing injury and threats to kill as well as a string of less serious offences.

“I have given careful consideration to the question whether a head sentence with a non-parole period is appropriate,” Judge Wilmoth said.

“A properly constructed sentence, taking into account all relevant matters would permit a relatively short period of parole, if you were determined to be eligible.

“By contrast a long Community Correction Order can provide a long period of structure and supervision, which is called for.”

Judge Wilmoth described the offending as very serious but said Dut’s youth was a significant factor in her sentencing.

“It is widely recognised that the rehabilitation of a young person is of great importance to the community,” she said.

“A lengthy prison term would do nothing to enhance those prospects, particularly given that you have already spent 18 months in custody.”
