The Hume Freeway was thrown into chaos on Friday afternoon due to grass fires that shut down traffic in both directions.
The highway was closed between Broadford and Wandong for multiple hours due to two grass fires in the median strip.
Traffic quickly banked on either side of the closure, which spans a distance of about 18km.
Fourteen CFA appliances attended the scene.
A CFA spokeswoman said the grass fires were called in shortly after 2pm.
It took crews close to 90 minutes to bring them under control.
