An elite private school on the Gold Coast has revealed when its new $20m learning centre will be completed.

Hillcrest Christian College’s new building is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by March next year.

The four-storey building at the Reedy Creek campus will include speciality classrooms with work benches, a welding bay, woodwork room as well as a laser cutter.

It will also feature learning spaces and technology hubs with a podcasting room, visual arts classrooms and a gallery.

The project also includes the redevelopment of its canteen, outdoor amphitheatre and landscapes areas.

An existing playground, stairs, retaining walls and shade structures have been demolished to make way for the building.

Local building company Alder was awarded the project under the watchful eye of construction manager Megan Mitchell, who has two daughters at Hillcrest.

Students from grades 10 to 12, who were considering a career in construction, were able to get a hands-on experience at the site during its Try a Trade day.

Ms Mitchell believed that by encouraging more students to participate in construction, the industry would become increasingly resilient while addressing the shortfall of some 105,000 additional construction workers needed to deliver projects across Australia.

“Manual labour is not for everybody so we need to support and inspire young people who are considering construction for a future career to look beyond the traditional trades to find the huge range of career opportunities on offer like environmental science and engineering,” she said.
