ABOUT THE PREMIERSHIP POSTER
The Herald Sun’s award-winning cartoonist’s 2018 poster design shows a swooping eagle clutching the Premiership Cup.
Knight’s inspiration for the West Coast Eagles was “powerful, with their power forwards (Josh) Kennedy and (Jack) Darling”.
This year the Herald Sun celebrates the 10th anniversary of official AFL premiership posters drawn by Knight, and the 65th year since the first WEG poster, having raised almost $6 million for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
The iconic premiership poster was the brainchild of cartoonist William Ellis Green — aka WEG — and first appeared after Footscray’s 1954 victory.
Knight took over drawing them in 2009 after WEG’s death, and the premiership poster remains the only one officially endorsed by the AFL.
“The premiership posters are an exciting part of the AFL calendar each year, and knowing the money raised is going to such an important cause in the Good Friday Appeal is a major drawcard for footy fans,” said Penny Fowler, chairman of the Good Friday Appeal and the Herald & Weekly Times.
