Hopes are high that the much-loved, multimillion-dollar stage extravaganza, Harry Potter and The Cursed Child will reopen at The Princess Theatre as early as February.

While no date has been yet set for the show’s return, producers have been working with the Victorian Government to ensure cast, crew and audiences can return safely to the theatre for the blockbuster show.

While it had been rumoured that the show might welcome back guests in January, February is shaping up as a more realistic option.

It is understood the cast are yet to resume rehearsals.

Executive Producer of the Australian production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Michael Cassel, said the relaunch would happen “as soon as possible.”

“I’m hoping we can resume performances sometime early 2021 and we’re working very closely with the relevant authorities to ensure when we do, it will be safe for the large cast, crew and of course the Princess Theatre audiences,” Mr Cassel said.

“This is the biggest and most complex show in Australia and after a long hiatus there are a lot of pieces to fit back together again.

“We’re conjuring up all the wizarding world magic to allow fans to experience Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as soon as possible and I for one, can’t wait to get back to Hogwarts.”

The Harry Potter team, the producers of the recently announced season of Come From Away, and the Marriner Group, owner of several of Melbourne’s grandest theatres, have been in consultation with the State Government about the resumption of shows, audience limits and COVID-19 crowd and safety protocols.

A government spokesperson said: “Organisers of major events have the capacity to seek certain exemptions through the Public Events Framework. We will consider all applications on their merits and in accordance with the prevailing public health advice.”

The Public Events Framework states that major events that are of significant value to Victoria from cultural, economic or government investment perspective, may be assessed for an exemption from the attendee limits and density requirements set out in the COVID-19 Public Events Framework.

Snaring Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was a huge coup for Melbourne and the show was estimated by producers to have injected $244 million into the Victorian economy in its first year.

It opened in January last year and was paused on March 13 owing to the COVID-19 crisis.

Organisers urged fans to keep an eye on the show’s website: harrypottertheplay.com for production updates.
