Molendinar house fire

Neighbours rushed towards a burning home in Molendinar carrying fire extinguishers and hoses, with one even smashing windows to save two dogs inside.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said he helped the dogs escape while others raced to put out the blaze on Breakspear Rd just before 8am.

“I was in my car lighting up a gas fridge and looked out the window and saw a heap of black smoke,” the neighbour said.

“We got up there and smashed a couple of windows and yelled out to see if anyone was home.

“We got their dogs out and the rest is history so to speak.

“The fellow next door threw a hose over and then there were a couple of other neighbours with fire extinguishers.

“The house was too far gone at that stage.”

No one was injured.

The man said the dogs were scared, but otherwise coping well.

“Once we got them out, they were alright,” he said.

“It gets the adrenaline pumping.”

Southport fire station officer Graeme Stoner said the blaze started in a rumpus room and took 30 minutes to bring under control.

He said the rear of the house was extensively damaged.

No one was inside at the time.

It is understood the home owner is overseas and her son who was staying there was at work when the blaze started.

Fire investigators will determine the cause.
