Regina King, the beloved social photographer who spent more than half a century snapping the Gold Coast, will be offered the city’s highest honour.

Mayor Tom Tate, backed by councillors, has proposed giving Ms King the keys to the city.

Ms King, known for her famous “yoo-hoo” catchphrase, retired in December 2022 after a career dating back to the 1960s.

Mr Tate said she was a “cherished” Gold Coaster who had become an “iconic” photographer and “captured the essence of the city’s social life”.

“Driven by her passion and commitment to the community, Regina has dedicated her life to chronicling the Gold Coast’s social and cultural life,” he said.

“Her work has brought joy, happiness and a sense of connection to countless residents, all without the pursuit of personal gain.

“Her contributions have enriched the fabric of our city in a deeply personal and enduring way”.

Mr Tate will now write to Ms King to make the offer, something she said she would accept.

Ms King said was “just overwhelmed” by the unanimous vote.

“Isn’t that lovely? I’m so thrilled by it,” she said.

“It’s just my job and I’ve loved doing it for more than 55 years.

“I’m so overwhelmed and I would love to accept the council’s offer. I’m thrilled and humbled by it all.”

Ms King arrived on the Gold Coast in 1965 and performed in variety shows including Les Girls.

She began working for the Gold Coast Sun newspaper upon its opening in March 1967 and her work, alongside her partner Peter Flowers, saw her do everything from fashion to social functions.

Shooting for the Gold Coast Bulletin, Ms King attended the openings of Conrad Jupiters Casino, Sanctuary Cove and the Marriott, interviewing countless celebrities and prominent figures across the decades.

Mr Tate said Ms King’s legacy was self-evident.

“(Her) remarkable contribution to the Gold Coast community make her an invaluable and beloved figure,” he said.

“Her lasting impact and dedication to promoting the city embody the spirit of the Gold Coast and I believe she is truly deserving of this prestigious honour.”
