A Gold Coast man has allegedly blown multiple times over the legal alcohol limit after he was involved in a crash on the M1. Read what he blew.

A Gold Coast man has been arrested by police after allegedly crashing his car on the M1 and blowing multiple times over the legal alcohol limit.

Emergency services were called to the Pacific Motorway near Helensvale at about 5am on Sunday to a reported two vehicle traffic crash in the Northbound lanes near the Hope Island Rd off ramp.

A Queensland Police Service (QPS) spokesman said officers attended the scene and spoke with one of the drivers involved, an 18-year-old man from Pimpama.

He allegedly returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.187 – more than three times the legal limit.

According to the QPS spokesman the man’s drivers licence has been suspended and he has been charged with drink driving and obstructing police. He will face Southport Magistrates Court in January. There were no injuries as a result of the crash.

The arrest comes less than 48 hours into Operation Mistletoe, a road safety blitz by police targeting dangerous drivers over the Christmas and New Year period.

As the crackdown got underway on Friday, Gold Coast Assistant District Officer, Superintendent Brett Jackson said it was “life imperative” that drivers heeded the warnings as the state faces a shocking road toll in 2024.

“We really don’t want to see any more loved ones lost during this Christmas period,” Supt Jackson said.

“Our aim is to make sure drivers are following the road rules and not doing any dangerous activities. Drink driving, driving under the influence of a drug, speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, we also need to watch out during this period for fatigue.”

So far 16 people have been killed on Gold Coast roads in 2024, with 287 lives lost statewide.

Operation Mistletoe will run until late January.
