POLICE FIND SHOTGUN ALLEGEDLY USED DURING ‘VIOLENT’ COAST ROBBERY

The court was told police were called to reports of a disturbance and found Dubrovsky on Wentworth St carrying two knives.

Judge William Everson said the two officers had repeatedly asked an “agitated” Dubrovsky to drop the knives but he refused.

He instead swung the knives towards the officers and yelled: “I’ll f---ing kill you guys”.

He said one of the officers fired five shots at Dubrovsky, hitting him in the left arm, the right shoulder and the stomach.

“A search of your home following the incident … revealed a handwritten suicide note,” Judge Everson said.

“Essentially, you had tragically formed the view your life wasn’t worth living.

“But you didn’t have the courage to kill yourself.

“You sought the agency of police officers which is colloquially termed death by police,” Judge Everson told the court.

“It was particularly heinous conduct for you to use police officers going about their difficult duties as a means to kill yourself.”

Defence barrister John McInnes, of Legal Aid Queensland, said Dubrovsky had suffered serious head injuries during a fall in 2016 which altered his personality and caused chronic depression.

He said Dubrovsky was an active person prior to the accident and his injuries left him feeling a sense of despair.

“He failed to consider the effect on others and what that really illustrates is the inherent intention in these sorts of cases and that is where someone wants to be shot by police,” he said.

Dubrovsky was convicted and sentenced to two years jail with an immediate parole release date.

Outside of court he told reporters he wanted to apologise to the officers involved.
