Residents demand clean up of suburban ‘crack den’

Locals are calling for a clean up of an “eyesore” harbouring piles of debris, car wrecks and other detritus amid a strong wind warning - but council says no action is being taken to address the property.

Labrador residents took to social media to express their concern and disgust over a messy property at the corner of Turpin Rd and Robert St.

A commercial building on the property has been boarded up, while a car bodies can be seen in the backyard, with debris piled up out the front.

The Bulletin door-knocked the property, but there was no response.

Residents have described the site as a “crack den”, “junk yard” and “blood disgusting”.

Kylie Jay told the Bulletin she was sick of seeing the mess every time she drove past.

“There’s just s**t there. I can’t imagine how the neighbours feel to be honest,” Ms Jay said.

“I don’t know why the council doesn’t monitor these types of things.”

The woman said she was worried about loose debris on the property as strong winds lashed the coast, as well as snakes and rodents.

“These things might be fine, but then you get a freak event,” Ms Jay said.

“It’s not until somebody gets hurt that people say, ‘we should have said something’.”

A Gold Coast City Council spokeswoman said no action was currently being taken to address the site.

“The city has previously received two requests relating to this Labrador property, the first in March 2018 and more recently in December 2020,” she said.

“Council officers can investigate private property under Local Law No. 8 (Public Health, Safety and Amenity) 2008.”

It is understood the site used to be home to a corner shop many years ago.

“Every business that has been in that shop has failed,” Ms Jay said.

“It’s almost like it’s got bad energy.”

A police spokeswoman said she was unable to comment on the history of the property due to privacy reasons.

The Bulletin contacted Bonney MP Sam O’Connor for comment, but did not receive a response by deadline.
