Police are on the hunt for a man who pulled a knife on an interstate tourist while at a bar in one of the Coast’s busiest night precincts.
Gold Coast police were called to Bine Bar and Dining at around 8pm on Sunday night after reports of an assault.
A Gold Coast police spokesperson said a man approached a 27-year-old NSW man from behind and threatened him with a knife.
Reports also said the NSW man sustained minor injuries after being punched in the head.
The aggressor left the scene in a white Ford Ranger.
Police are urging any witnesses or anyone with information to call them at 131 444.
Bine Bar and Dining owner Scott Imlach said the altercation began after a couple who came in for a drink got into an argument with each other.
“Someone intervened from the table next to them,” he said.
“The young guy then lost the plot and pulled a knife.”
Footage of the incident obtained by the Bulletin showed the man throwing a chair at the group of people.
Other members of the group were trying to diffuse the situation by not acknowledging the man wearing a black hat, black clothing and white Gucci shoes.
Mr Imlach said the manager, staff and locals helped to kick the man out of the venue which he then left in the vehicle.
Mr Imlach said the man who was sitting at the table reported to staff and police the aggressor threatened him with a knife.
Mr Imlach said he was “absolutely disgusted” people carried knives out in public.
The incident comes almost two months after another one of Mr Imlach’s businesses was at the centre of an assault where patrons fell two-plus-metres through a window.
Mr Imlach said at the time, “incidents like this always give you second thought of why you do it”.
“It’s heartbreaking. It is so stressful.”
He said he was disappointed police took two and a half hours to come to the venue while the woman who was left behind by the man was “in shock, vomiting and collapsed”.
“Police are so understaffed, the Labor government need to address this issue,” Mr Imlach said.
“Had they got there earlier they could have arrested the guy and got him off the street”.
A Gold Coast police spokesperson said “due to the nature of policing, ‘calls for service’ must be triaged based on the threat to life and safety”.
“Officers are deployed to urgent priority matters first.
“Police response is based on a number of variable including what information is provided by the informant at the time, the nature of the offence and type of scene”.
