Emergency services have issued urgent plea to beachgoers following a second drowning tragedy on the Gold Coast in the space of a week.
A 38-year-old Brisbane man was unable to be resuscitated by lifeguards when he was pulled unconscious from the water at Currumbin about 10.30 on Friday morning.
“This incident is a tragedy. This could happen to anyone,” Gold Coast Acting Superintendent Jason Tuffley said.
“It provides a stark reminder to swim between the flagged area where lifeguards can watch over you and your loved ones.
“This incident was 300 metres south of a flagged area.”
It followed another drowning death just six days earlier at Burleigh Heads. Emergency services were called to the beach off Fifth Ave about 11.54pm on Sunday December 22 where a man was found face down in the water.
Police were the first to arrive on scene and began CPR before paramedics took over. Despite their best efforts the 59-year-old man from Miami died at the scene.
