A “harsh economic climate” has forced the organisers of a well-known feature of Barwon Heads’ summer scene to take a break after seven years, but it is hoped the program will return in 2026.

The group behind the Captivating Wonderland Spiegeltent has confirmed financial pressure has forced its hand, with Wonderland Presents director Melissa Head saying the program was unviable in its current form.

“The exceedingly harsh economic climate we’ve faced over the past 12 months and rising costs, plus the hit from Cyclone Jasper in Port Douglas have made it impossible in the current format and we are taking the time to restructure and reset the new Wonderland for the future,” she said.

“As we actively seek sponsorship from the arts, Victorian tourism, and corporate sectors, we hope to return in 2026 and look forward to seeing our patrons again enjoy the magic of Wonderland Spiegeltent by the Sea.”

Ms Head said that did not mean the fun would cease at Barwon Heads, as the ferris wheel and bungee trampoline would be operating.

“We thank all our patrons for your ongoing support and messages and Barwon Coast and we wish the Barwon Heads community, businesses, artists, local and interstate patrons a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” she said.

This year would have marked the eighth year of the Wonderland Spiegeltent being part of the town’s holiday offerings.

Barwon Coast chief executive Gareth Smith said he was delighted to announce a new funfair coming to Leahy Square this summer.

“Families can look forward to enjoying attractions including a ferris wheel, food vendors and a bungee trampoline, all while maintaining plenty of open space for community use,” he said.

“While the Wonderland Spiegeltent festival hub provided great family friendly shows and activities over a number of years, it is disappointing that they were not able to visit us this season.

“It is a challenging time for operators and hope they may be able to return in the future.”

Mr Smith said the coastal region would be a flurry of activity during summer.

“Whether it’s exploring the Great Southern Reef with a snorkel, learning about our rich local heritage at the Barwon Coast Discovery Centre on Sunday afternoons, or experiencing our unspoilt beaches, there’s no shortage of ways to create lasting memories,” he said.

“We’re fortunate to have excellent local operators offering everything from kayak hire to surf lessons to actively enjoy our natural attractions.

“It’s a special corner of Victoria that rewards everyone who takes the time to discover it.”
