Two men have been questioned by police in relation to the alleged murder of 20-year-old Corio man Jayme ‘Chugs’ Sykes.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed on Thursday morning that the two Colac men, aged 23 and 26, who self-presented at Geelong hospital with non-life-threatening injuries on Sunday morning, had been interviewed by detectives and released pending further inquiries.
“The investigation remains ongoing,” she said.
Another Colac man, James Farquhar, was arrested and subsequently charged for the alleged murder.
The 26-year-old faced Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Monday afternoon.
No application for bail was made, Mr Farquhar will appear in court in February next year for a committal mention.
Mr Sykes was allegedly fatally stabbed on Little Malop St at 5.30am on Sunday.
It’s understood security were on high alert at Geelong hospital following Mr Sykes’ death, where scenes were “extremely” emotional.
A GoFundMe to cover Mr Sykes’ funeral costs was set up on Tuesday.
Just 20 hours after it was posted, it had already raised just under $36,000, just shy of its goal of $40,000.
“We are heartbroken to share the tragic loss of our dear friend, Jayme Sykes,” the GoFundMe read.
“At just 20 years old Jayme’s was the life of the party, someone who could make anyone laugh and light up the room.
“His warmth, humour, and energy brought so much joy to those who knew him.
“He was taken from us far too soon, leaving his family, friends, and community devastated.
“We want to honour Jayme’s incredible spirit by giving him the farewell he deserves.”
Social media tributes continued to flow for Mr Sykes.
The Geelong West Giants, where Mr Sykes’ brother had Mitch played under 14s football, said via social media the club was “saddened to hear” of his death.
“Jayme was the young kid who would come along to the club, kicking the footy around with his dad while Mitch trained,” the post read.
“His enthusiasm and love for the game were always evident, and he brought a joyful energy to our community.”
Limitless Barber Co, a barber shop at which Mr Sykes worked for about six months, also posted a tribute saying he would be missed.
“Limitless Barber Co sends its love to Jayme and family,” the post read.
Mr Sykes’ mum Sally-Anne Beal told the Geelong Advertiser she wants tightened knife restrictions to become her late son’s legacy.
