Tom Morfitt-White and Charlie Wason win international film awards

A 12-year-old boy from Indented Head has won two international film awards for a movie he made with his friend on an iPhone.

A 12-year-old boy from Indented Head has won two international film awards for a movie he made with his friend on an iPhone.

Tom Morfitt-White made a short film called ‘Bullet Proof Kids’ with his friend Charlie Wason, who is currently overseas.

Charlie Wason made the film with his friend Tom.

The pair won best cinematography at the SmartFone FlickFest on Sunday in Sydney, and Tom won best actor.

Both awards were in the category for kids under 16.

“It was so exciting,” Tom said.

“We entered as a bit of a learning experience.”

There were 468 films from across 60 countries entered in the category and about 30 finalists.

Tom said the movie, which was about war, was filmed around Indented Head and the pair spent about an hour planning the scenes.

“I play a homeless boy who gets conscripted to go to war but he doesn’t want to go because he thinks war is a horrible thing,” Tom said.

Charlie is also in the film and he plays a character who is “excited” to go to war.

“There are a few fighting scenes,” Tom said.

The two main characters, who are on opposite sides of the battle, then run into each other at the end of the film.

“They look each in the eye and put their guns down because they realise they don’t want to kill each other,” Tom said.

He said planning is essential when making a movie and recommended scouting locations prior to filming.

Tom said he hoped to keep making films on his smartphone and wanted to work in the arts industry when he was older.
