Hitchhiker found with serious injuries in Belmont prompts police appeal

A woman was found with serious injuries in Belmont in the early hours of Saturday, prompting police to ask for public assistance.

Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance after a woman was located with injuries in Belmont this morning.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Barrabool Rd and Riverview Tce about 1am on Saturday after an injured woman was located by a passer-by.

She was transported to hospital with serious injuries and underwent surgery.

Investigators were told the woman was seen hitchhiking along Barrabool Rd shortly before being located.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives attended the scene to assist investigators with determining how the woman sustained her injuries.

Police say at this stage it is unclear as to what occurred or what led to the woman being found at the location.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Detectives would like to speak with anyone who saw the woman prior to emergency services involvement or who has dashcam footage.
