Kate and Xavier Lawrence know what it is like to have a family pet go missing.

Now, through their Geelong-based company Roamr, the couple is helping pet owners keep tabs on their beloved animals through a GPS tracker.

Mrs Lawrence said the business launched just shy of six months ago.

“We were living in Anglesea when our dog Winki went missing,” she said.

“She was missing for two days and it was through an old school flyer in a local shop that we got her back but that stuck with us.”

Mrs Lawrence said the GPS device allowed pets to have some freedom, at places like parks, large properties and beaches, while owners could still track them.

“We live in a beautiful place with a big pet community and we want to help people get outdoors with their pets while still keeping them safe,” she said.

The tracker relies on GPS technology, meaning it does not have to be in close proximity to devices with data to work.

It slides onto a collar and has customisable geofence zones so owners can be alerted when pets leave designated zones.

Mrs Lawrence said a point of difference in the market was that Roamr did not require a subscription.

“We found a SIM with data that lasts for 10 years on average for a one-time payment,” she said.

“It uses a free app with no in-app purchases and it’s so easy to use.”

Roamr will be an exhibitor at this year’s Dog Lover’s Festival in Melbourne for the first time and Mrs Lawrence said they were looking forward to the event.

The festival, which is celebrating 10 years, is at Melbourne Showgrounds, Ascot Vale from 9.30am to 5pm on October 26 and 27.
