UPDATED: Victoria Police have launched an investigation after a man was found dead on an Ocean Grove back beach.
Emergency services were called to assist police at a location near Sunset Strip on Wednesday at about 3.30pm, after a passer-by made the grim discovery.
The area is popular with Ocean Grove residents and is close to the Buckley Park Foreshore Reserve.
“The body is yet to be identified and cause of death yet to be determined at this stage. Police are investigating,” a Victoria Police spokesman told the Geelong Advertiser.
Ambulance Victoria were also called to assist.
A spokeswoman from nearby coffee shop, Dawn Ocean Grove, said the discovery had shocked customers and residents.
“It’s really strange,” she said.
“People are definitely talking about it this afternoon, everyone is wondering what has happened.
“The general gist is no one really knows anything, it’s very mysterious.
“It is right near us.”
Another resident, who did not want to be named, said the area, near Collendina, was quite isolated.
“It’s a bit close to home,” she said.“It’s very sad.”
It comes almost a year after the discovery of a middle-aged man near the main swimming beach at Ocean Grove in April, 2022.
The man, in his 50s, was discovered in a state of decomposition within metres of the popular restaurant The Dunes.
A Melbourne teenager found the body off a walking track to the beach.
The identities of the male bodies found at Ocean Grove this week and last year are yet to be determined.
