GEELONG residents remain stunned a serial stalker is yet to be identified despite a statewide effort from Victoria Police to unmask the alleged offender.
Divisional Response Unit detectives released CCTV images of a man on March 20, along with a plea for information to help identify him, with stills showing him for the first time without the surgical mask he has traditionally worn.
It’s believed to be the same offender who has terrified many homeowners in Geelong and the Surf Coast since the disturbing behaviour began in January.
A video released by the Geelong Advertiser last week outlining the fresh police details and images has generated more than 230,000 views and attracted more than 18,000 likes, yet the man’s identity remains a mystery.
It comes as fresh details emerge of his most recent known offending – in Werribee on March 7 and 8.
He was reported attempting to enter numerous properties in the suburb, 45km north of Geelong, across two consecutive days.
No confrontation or items were stolen during the attempted aggravated burglaries – consistent with his trespassing across Rippleside, Bell Post Hill, Highton and Torquay.
His ability to evade capture has prompted many Geelong residents to agree with US criminal profiler Mike King’s theory that he could live in Melbourne.
“He can’t live in Geelong if he hasn’t been (dobbed) in yet, surely,” said one Rippleside resident.
“He could bring a bike on the train.”
Another told a community group “someone must know this person” after his image was released last week.
“It’s OK to be suspicious as we really need to be on top of this person stalking our neighbourhood,” she said.
“He must be caught to put folks at ease.
After looking at the geographical location of the alleged offences, Mr King said the man could be “working his way down from Melbourne.”
“It’s not someone who just happened to be walking home from the beach in their flip flops and T-shirt and is peeking through a window, this guy is preparing,” he said.
“Usually these predators don’t commit crimes in neighbourhoods that they don’t fit in with.
“They have to blend in as they travel to and fro.”
