The co-owner of a much loved hamburger institution is being remembered as a “humble and intelligent” man after his sudden death.

Tim Tanner, the co-owner of Kermond’s Hamburgers which has stores in Geelong, Warrnambool and Port Fairy, died suddenly at his Geelong home on October 30, aged 43.

Mr Tanner grew up in Warrnambool and first started working at Kermond’s there when he was 16.

Mr Tanner’s younger sister Grace Tanner said her brother loved the old school nature of the business and the values of respect and hard work that were instilled in him.

“Tim was a very intelligent man,” she said.

“He worked overseas.

“It was always his dream to be an owner and to expand the business.”

“When Tim was lucky enough to become a part-owner in Warnambool, that is when he started ticking away about he could make it better.”

Kermond’s opened their first Geelong store on Ryrie St in 2018, which was managed by Mr Tanner.

He lived in the Geelong for the past five years and “loved” the area, Ms Tanner said.

Staff at Kermond’s stores described Mr Tanner as a teacher and mentor to them.

“He loved to share his knowledge and life experience but he would never give it to you the easy way,” Ms Tanner said.

“He would want you to figure it out.”

Mr Tanner is also being remembered for his love of music, motorbikes and his precious HR Holden, which he named Joe.

“He would always been seen driving around in his old, restored Holden,” Ms Tanner said.

“He would go for a surf at Barwon Heads and grab a coffee in the morning and then go work at Kermond’s for the day.”

Ms Tanner described her brother as “extremely humble”.

“People would ask ‘mate, what do you do for work?’,” she said.

“He would say ‘I just work in a burger shop’.”

Kermond’s Geelong has temporily closed until further notice while Mr Tanner’s loved ones grieve.
