Emergency services attend Newcomb crash after cyclist was hit by a truck on Bellarine Hwy

A cyclist has been rushed to hospital in a serious condition after he was hit by a truck in Geelong on Wednesday in an incident that shocked onlookers.

A cyclist was rushed to hospital in a serious condition after he was hit by a truck in Geelong on Wednesday.

Emergency services were called to the collision on the Bellarine Hwy at about 4.50pm.

A police spokeswoman said a cyclist, a 34-year-old man from Armstrong Creek, was crossing the highway at the Atkins St intersection when he collided with a truck.

The incident shocked onlookers and caused major disruptions.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the man was suffered life-threatening injuries to his upper and lower body and was taken to Geelong hospital in a serious condition.

Police said the truck driver, a 35-year-old woman from Gnarwarre, stopped at the scene and has been spoken to by officers.

Geelong Highway Patrol are investigating the crash but its believed the cyclist was not wearing a helmet.

Newcomb residents described the incident as a “terrible smash”, with the man seen laying on the road before emergency services arrived.

One witness said she saw the “awful” accident unfold in front of her eyes.

“The cyclist just rode out in front of the traffic,” she said.

“The truck swerved trying to avoid him but he went flying through the air.”

A blue bicycle could be seen dangerously close to the front wheels of the heavy vehicle.

It’s believed several motorists stopped to assist.

Multiple police units and highway patrol officers attended the crash, with officers inspecting the damaged bike and clearing the scene.
