International student Sarbjeet Singh has not seen his family for four years, since moving to Australia to study in 2020.

Mr Singh, 22, came over from India to complete his Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) at Deakin University’s Waterfront campus.

He said the experience has been great, but started out with some difficulties.

Two weeks in, the first Covid-19 lockdown occurred, and the few friends he had made went back to their home countries.

“I was just here by myself in a country where people don’t even speak my first language,” Mr Singh said.

“It was a challenge, but then, the love and support I got here from the Geelong community was just great.

“I got involved with a few community organisations … and started working at Deakin.

“My journey has definitely been great.”

Mr Singh has certainly made the most of his university experience, joining the Deakin University Student Association, starting the Deakin Indian Club – now the largest club at the university – and working with Study Geelong and Engineering Australia.

He has also been a student ambassador for Deakin, helping other students adjust to their new university life.

As recognition of his outstanding efforts, Mr Singh was awarded two prestigious awards – International Student of the Year – Regional, and the overall Premier’s award for International Student of the Year at the Victorian International Education Awards.

Mr Singh said he video called his family after winning the awards, who were all smiles.

Mr Singh is now employed as a stormwater engineer with the City of Greater Geelong.

He said he was looking forward to working for the community in the new role.

“This is just the beginning,” he said.
