Deadly snake sighted in Geelong Grammar dorm room

Boarders at one of Australia’s most expensive schools received a surprise when a tiger snake was reportedly spotted in a dorm room.

Footage has emerged purportedly showing a tiger snake in a girls’ dorm room at Geelong Grammar.

In the video, a student is seen approaching a bookshelf, where a snake is visible.

From the short, five-second clip, it is not clear how the snake got into the dorms.

Commenting on broadcaster Jacqui Felgate’s post on Instagram, a woman identified herself as the mother of the student, and said it was an “eventful night” at the school and at home.

“What a great team of staff and students she had to support her,” she wrote.

Geelong Grammar hosts more than 800 students as boarders, which can cost parents up to $84,240 a year.

Another commenter stated that Hovells Creek, which runs through Lara and is nearby to the prestigious Corio school, was “tiger snake central”.

Tiger snakes are the one of the deadliest snakes in the world, responsible for the second-highest number of bites in Australia, and are common in the Geelong region.

In October, snake catcher Darren Keiller told the Geelong Advertiser that tiger snakes made up the majority of sightings.

A Geelong Grammar spokesman said the school has several staff who are experienced in snake handling and relocation.

“The safety, health and wellbeing of Geelong Grammar school students and staff are our priorities,” he said.
