Darren Kirwood, 31, applies for bail after fatal Winchelsea crash

The driver charged after a Winchelsea crash that killed Deans Marsh woman Kylie Doak was allegedly drunk after a wedding and asked police to shoot him, his bail application heard.

Deans Marsh woman Kylie Doak, 55, was killed on the Winchelsea-Deans Marsh Rd just after 10pm on Saturday, with her death sending shockwaves through the community.

The driver accused of killing a mother of three in a fatal smash at Winchelsea asked police to shoot him after the collision, a court was told.

Darren Kirwood, 31, a senior guard at Barwon prison, was allegedly “clearly intoxicated” after leaving his best mate’s wedding, a police officer told his bail application at the Geelong Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Mr Kirwood was charged with culpable driving and dangerous driving causing death.

He was allegedly seen swerving before the crash on the Winchelsea-Deans Marsh Rd on Saturday night.

Dean’s Marsh woman Kylie Doak, 55, was killed in the collision.

The court heard two witness told police they saw Mr Kirwood swerving and nearly colliding with two other cars.

The victims were driving home when Mr Kirwood’s car allegedly collided head on with their vehicle.

He was breathalysed at the scene and allegedly returned a 0.116 BAC reading.

Detective Senior Constable Micheal Fowler, who was called as a police witness, said Mr Kirwood was “clearly intoxicated” in body-worn camera footage from the accident.

“I do not believe alcohol was the only thing affecting him,” he said.

Prescription medication was also allegedly found in Mr Kirwood’s vehicle.

He also said Mr Kirwood told a witness to the crash that he “regrets he didn’t die.”

He also allegedly asked police to shoot him.

Magistrate Urfa Masood questioned whether the crash was an attempted suicide.

Mr Kirwood was supported in court by his mother, sister, partner and ten friends who were all tearful during the hearing.

He had his head in his hands and looked at the floor for large portions of the bail application.

His lawyer, Alex Good said he had a broken ankle, bruised ribs and a possible broken toe due to the crash.

Mr Good said the bail application was based on it being Mr Kirwood’s first time in custody, his vulnerability in custody as a prison guard, his mental health and his injuries from the crash.

The victim’s brother and another family member were also in court.

The family of the victims opposed Mr Kirwood receiving bail.

Magistrate Masood said a “comprehensive” and “concrete” mental health plan needed to be in place before Mr Kirwood was released on bail.

She adjourned the application to Friday.

Mr Kirwood will remain in custody until his next court appearance.
