Geelong’s culinary top achievers were honoured at the Golden Plate Regional Hospitality Awards, with a number of local restaurants and cafes taking out top gongs.

The awards, held on Monday night at 1915 in North Geelong, crowned regional Victoria’s best chefs, restaurants and bars across 17 categories.

Claribeaux, located at the Curlewis Golf Club, won best casual dining for the second year in a row with its French fusion, contemporary menu.

The judges said Claribeaux, led by head chef Luke King, was “so much more” than a golf course clubhouse.

“A sleek dining room with expansive views across le terrain de golf (the golf course), a season-striding menu that waves a beret to the 8th arrondissement (a district in Paris) but would keep the chaps across the channel happy too, and a drinks selection that roams from the Bellarine to Burgundy, Bordeaux and beyond,” the judges said.

Ket Baker in Wallington took out best unlicensed cafe and Surfside Cafe in Ocean Grove won best coffee.

Bean and Base Cafe and Wood Fired Pizza in Rippleside was again a crowd favourite, taking out the people’s choice award with more than 1600 votes.

The Q Train in Drysdale won best local drinks list and was highly commended for best menu of local food.

The restaurant’s second year apprentice, Emilee Rose Tapp, was highly commended for apprentice for the year.

The 18th Amendment bar in Geelong was also honoured for its front of house, taking out best customer service.

Lead judge Garry Burns congratulated all finalists on the consistency in an exceptional field of venues.

“The judges have eaten in excess of 1000 courses around regional Victoria in the past six months judging in excess of 50 venues,” he said.
