Victorians have been warned to be on the alert for fake tradies over summer, with more than a $1 million lost to scam artists throughout 2020.

In one instance, a man paid $10,000 deposit to a fake carpentry business who never began work on his house and later disappeared.

The Andrews Government has issued an urgent warning to be on the lookout for dodgy tradesmen over coming months, with more Victorians working from home exposed to doorknock scams and cash only jobs.

There were 157 reports of fake tradies made to Consumer Affairs Victoria in 2020, with more than half of these occurring over summer.

It is estimated more than $1 million was lost over this time.

Reports of fake tradies reaching out to Victorians online have also doubled in the last financial year.

Mohsen Shojae told the Herald Sun his wife had found a carpenter through an online search in July, with the fake tradesmen asking for $10,000 upfront to cover materials.

But once paid the man never showed up to begin the work and has not replied to messages or calls since August.

“He looked like a good guy to be honest,” Mr Shojae said.

“My advice is don’t pay upfront and get a recommendation from a friend or someone you can trust.

“Otherwise there is a risk of something like this happening again.”

Often the scams end with work that is unfinished, not safe or not started, with only a first name or mobile number provided before asking for money.

“Taking a few simple steps before hiring somebody will help ensure that you don’t get duped by a fake tradie,” Consumer Affairs Minister Melissa Horne said.

“Fake tradies frequently target the most vulnerable in our community – with many Victorians at home and facing challenges as a result of coronavirus, it’s more important than ever to ensure people are aware of the risks.’’
