FROM Name that Tune to Millionaire Hot Seat, family friendly game shows have been a part of Aussie TV fabric since the 1950s. Are these the greatest quiz shows ever?

ABC's Hard Quiz

THEY’VE been a constant fixture on our televisions since they were switched on in 1956 — family-friendly game shows have never gone out of fashion.

The very first Australian quiz show Name that Tune, hosted by Bruce Gyngell, was aired on Sydney television on TCN9.

A year later, Melbourne made The Price is Right, hosted by Geoff Manion hit television screens locally.

Pick-a-Box, a Monday night favourite in 1957 hosted by husband and wife team Bob and Dolly Dyer became one of the first national shows on Australian TV.

Here are some of the Melbourne made shows that we’ve grown up with and continue to watch.

Who wants to be a Millionaire

Filmed in Melbourne’s Docklands Studios and hosted by “Mr Melbourne” Eddie McGuire this show was based on the UK format of the same name.

It relied on contestants to correctly answer 15 questions in a row to win the elusive $1 million prize.

Many of the shows catchphrases became a part of Australian colloquialism — including “can I phone a friend” — an opportunity to get help on a question the contestant didn’t know.

It’s even had a revamp and is now on out screens in a new format named Millionaire Hot Seat.

Family Feud

Currently being filmed at Global Television Studios in South Melbourne, this game show has had many remakes and reinventions and is still a favourite on our TV screens.

It first hit our screens between 1977-1996, then came back in 2006-07 hosted by Bert Newton.

It’s now enjoying a rise in popularity as it is aired on Channel Ten’s three channels Sunday to Friday nights.

Hosted by Grant Denyer, the format hasn’t really changed over the years with two families going head to head.

The Chase Australia

Also filmed in Melbourne, The Chase Australia is based on a UK version of a show of the same name.

Hosted by Andrew O’Keefe, four contestants play against an opponent, known as the “chaser” who effectively is the bank.

It first aired in 2015 and is shown before the news each weeknight.

Rockwiz is hosted by Julia Zemiro and Brian Nankervis.

This live music quiz show is filmed at St Kilda’s Esplanade Hotel and pits lesser known music artists against the more well known in teams hoping to receive Rockwiz glory.

It’s a warts and all type show, that is just as grungy as it’s surroundings and has been a popular fixture on SBS hosted by Julia Zemiro and Brian Nankervis.
