An Essendon school community is mourning the loss of a student after the teenage girl was allegedly struck by an out-of-control driver in Carlton.

The 16-year-old girl from Brunswick was travelling in an Alfa Romeo with her family on Lygon St when Gulet Ahmed allegedly hit them in his Volkswagen on Saturday afternoon.

He was arrested and charged with negligently causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury and possessing methamphetamine last week.

But on Friday, the 40-year-old had his charges upgraded to culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death and other offences.

The year 11 student from Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School tragically died in hospital four days after the crash.

A school spokeswoman told the Herald Sun the student’s death was a “tragic loss”.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends during this difficult time,” she said.

“Our school community is devastated by this news and we are committed to providing support and resources to students, staff and all members of our community as we grieve together.”

The spokeswoman said the school will work closely with the family to honour the student’s life and memory.

“We encourage all members of our school community to come together during this difficult time and support one another,” she said.

The teenager’s mum and dad were also in the car and were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Earlier, Carlton local Jeffrey Broussard recalled the moment he feared his partner was dead, after the car allegedly struck the pair as they walked their dog along Lygon St.

Mr Broussard and his partner, Travis Oliver, were crossing the road with their beloved pet, Ouiser, on Saturday afternoon after grabbing a coffee and running errands nearby.

Mr Broussard said he saw a Volkswagen flying down Elgin St seconds before it slammed into an Alfa Romeo, which then spun towards the couple and their dog.

“The Volkswagen came out of nowhere, going about 80km/h, and T-boned the Alfa Romeo,” he said.

“It was like slow motion, seeing that car get spun … and then that’s when it hit us.”

He said the impact caused his partner to hit his head on the road, which initially had Mr Broussard fearing the worst.

However, Mr Oliver managed to avoid any life threatening injuries.

“He has a fractured skol and fractured pelvis,” Mr Broussard said.

“He’s in good spirits for now.

“We’re waiting to hear if he needs surgery on his pelvis.”

Mr Broussard said Ouiser “flew out of her harness” and ran off in the chaos but remarkably made her way back home.

The bernedoodle was taken to Lort Smith Animal Hospital on Sunday after hurting her paws.

“They had to put her under anaesthesia to treat her,” Mr Broussard said.

Mr Ahmed was detained in a dramatic citizen’s arrest in the moments after the crash, with multiple men seen pinning him to the ground.

Mr Broussard said he was extremely grateful for their quick thinking.

“The driver was out of his mind and might have left the scene before the cops arrived,” he said.

“He got out of the car with no shirt on, wanting to fight everyone.”

Police allege Mr Ahmed was seen driving erratically before his car collided with the Alfa Romeo, causing the latter car to spin out of control and strike the Carlton couple.

Mr Ahmed was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries before he was questioned by police.

Detective Sergeant Stephen Hill said police will allege the man caused the crash when he failed to stop at a red light.

Police will also investigate whether he allegedly became aggressive towards onlookers immediately after the crash, prompting the citizen’s arrest.

“I am in awe of any member of the public that stops at scenes like this. It’s very confronting and very traumatic,” Sgt Hill said.

“It’s behaviour like this that threatens every person that is on or around our roads.”

One business owner said they heard a “loud bang” when the crash occurred.

“This was louder than anything I’ve ever heard,” he said.

“We were working and all of a sudden there was this huge noise.

“Whoever it was sounded like they were driving at great speed.”

He said he rushed out of his shop to find the wrecked cars in the middle of the road and police rushing to the intersection.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV, dashcam footage or any other information that could assist investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Mr Ahmed will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on March 21.
