Drysdale’s David Sykes bags 4-0 before stumps against Anglesea

Drysdale has Anglesea on the ropes as a star Collendina all-rounder grabbed five wickets from his first appearance at the bowling crease after an elbow operation before Christmas.

A stunning spell of 4-0 off two overs from Drysdale’s David Sykes has Anglesea on the ropes in the final round of the BPCA’stop tier.

Earlier in the day at Drysdale Recreation Reserve, the Hawks had been dismissed for 199 as Jason Malcolm top scored with 88 with support from Hayden Eddy (41) and Ben Spencer (25).

It was Malcolm’s second half century since the Christmas break.

However, the Hawks struck back to leave the Roos 4-6 after four overs before stumps, with Ben Harcombe and Ky Eskrigge both dismissed for ducks.

It was easily Sykes’ best figures for the year after taking 3-39 against Jan Juc in early January.

The Hawks are nine points off Barrabool in fourth place who have a fight on their hands at Ceres Recreation Reserve.

The Bulls were rolled for 209 by Queenscliff with James Fisher (62), Kane Pickering (59) and Michael Kelson (39) contributing important runs as Ned Stephens returned the impressive figures of 7-78 off 21.4 overs.

It was Kelson’s fifth half century for the season and is only behind Clay Mulgrew in the A1 batting aggregate.

In reply, the Coutas progressed to 0-52 off 12 overs with Toby Smith (38 not out) and Lochie Philp (12 not out) at the crease.

At Bob Pettitt Reserve, Barwon Heads compiled 220 after recovering from 5-59.

Jaxon Mallett (44), Matteo Surace (43) and Harry Hyland (40) were at the centre of the recovery after Nicky Smith (3-54) Alexander Jennings (3-32) and Mark Zahra (2-38) did the damage for the Sharks.

And Ocean Grove inched their way to 8-144 off 75 overs against Armstrong Creek at Shell Road Reserve.

The Grubbers had slid to 6-72 before Daniel Roddis (50) and Dylan Thorley (29 not out) put on 47 for the seventh wicket.

Jack Maclean (2-19 off 15 overs), Daniel Maclean (2-41) and Clay Mulgrew (2-68 off a marathon 33 overs) were the chief wicket takers.

Demons dominate Suns in battle for finals spot

Portarlington holds the whip hand against Surfcoast Suns as both teams chase a finals place in the BPCA’s second tier.

The fourth placed Demons and the Suns in fifth are locked on 48 points apiece with Portarlington posting 9-259 at home on Saturday.

It was a consistent batting effort from the home team with Brenton Toole (57), James Tilders (54 not out), Jackson McGrath (41), Paul McGrath (37) and Cameron Gourley (23) contributing to the final total.

With the ball, Blake Robinson (4-87) and Rhys Healy (2-51) were the only multiple wicket takers

Meanwhile, it was an absolute runfest at Oakdene Oval as ladder leaders Wallington posted 4-368 declared off just 66 overs against Newcomb.

The Bulls actually had the Wallabies in some trouble early at 3-53, before James Sood (158 not out off 148 rocks) and Billy Gravett (133 not out off 116) combined for a 255-run stand.

Captain Shane Healey took a relatively tidy 2-44 off 15 overs.

Newcomb finished at 0-15 off six overs by stumps.

Third placed Collendina could force an outright against St Leonards after already banking a first innings win on day one at Len Trewin Reserve.

The Cobras passed the home team’s score of 137 (Paul Hassan 51, Craig Day 37) with Corey Walter claiming 5-33 off 10 overs while Jackson de Jong produced an outstanding cameo with 3-11 off five overs.

It was Walter’s first time at the bowling crease since early December following elbow surgery later that month.

“(It) was giving me a fair bit of grief for a few years,” Walter said.

“I missed the last game in December and have been playing as a bat after Christmas.

“(Saturday) was the first real bowl I’ve had post-op so was nice to bowl some overs.”

In reply, Walter was at it again with 53 not out with support from Jacob Gasior (49) as the Cobras took a one-run lead heading into next week with eight wickets in hand.

Walter came into Round 14 leading the batting aggregate with 524 runs at 104.8, after a stellar 23-24 which produced 595 runs at 54.09.

Inverleigh, six points clear of the Cobras on the A2 table, are in a strong position to bank another win after posting 210 (Lachlan Platt 80, Kieran McNally 54, Will Collins 28, Mitchell Buhrmann 4-56, Shane Murdoch 3-51, Peter Gray 2-53) against Winchelsea who are 1-2 in reply.
