A TOE-gnawing chihuahua has made short work of his owner’s feet in a bizarre case of foot in mouth.
Former Hawks star Campbell Brown today revealed his father-in-law was recovering in hospital after the family’s pet dog Sabel chewed off his left toe while he was asleep.
And it’s not the first time.
Tom Johnston threatened to give the dog away after it feasted on his left toe two years ago.
“He’s like a shark,’’ Brown said today.
“Once he got a taste for blood he couldn’t help but head back for more.’’
He said the dog got away with the nailbiting midnight snack because his father-in-law, a diabetic, has no feeling in his feet.
A text message from his wife saying, “it’s happened again’’ was the first Brown knew of the latest incident.
He said Mr Johnston required an amputation and a skin graft and would likely need weeks to recover as he learned to regain his balance.
“He wanted to give the dog away the first time but my mother-in-law said no.
“There’s a fair chance the dog may now get the boot.”
Chihuahua Rescue Australia president Natalie Brabham said the hungry dog might have been trying to help.
“Chihuahuas love to lick people’s feet, especially at night in bed,” she said.
“It can be an anxiety release for them but if the owner has a medical condition it may be that the dog is trying to help. They can sense it.
“Generally it’s a lick but sometimes it can be more of a nibble.
“They are a funny little breed with many quirks so nothing ever surprises me but I’ve certainly not heard of this happening before.”
