The success of the Barron River Food Festival could be replicated month-in, month-out, as the organiser works with council to organise a regular Eat Street-style event in Cairns.
Foodies were treated to a diverse spread of food trucks, local restaurants and the best local tipples as they tucked into some delicious dishes at Saturday’s food festival.
An array of international flavours got the tastebuds going and live music and entertainment got the crowds moving at the Stratford Dolphins Football Club, where the event gave locals the perfect reason to leave the house and get some grub with a selection of $10 “tropical tapas” plates on offer.
Event organiser Kane Brown said the festival was a massive hit.
“I think we had a huge turnout without seeing the exact numbers, but it must have been well over 2500 people,” he said.
Mr Brown said there was an appetite in the community for more events like this and he had eyes on something more regular.
“People want to go out and eat but they maybe don’t want to spend $30-$35 on a main dish,” he said.
“They want to get a bit of everything, and try something new.”
Mr Brown said that he was working with council to bring an Eat Street style monthly event to Cairns.
“We are working out possible locations,” he said.
“It’s something we could be doing once a month say between April and December each year.
“We have lots of great vendors and this is a great way to get them out there, support them and give people some good cheap food and a bit of entertainment.”
Adults sipped some of their favourite beverages at the bar while listening to popular local musical acts The Brazilians and Eddie Skiba Music.
Kids were also kept well entertained with jumping castles, mini golf, and the dwarf goats at the petting zoo.
The events featured ten food vendors spanning a mix of cuisines and tasting friendly dishes.
“We had Chinese, Japanese, African barbecue, Tahitian ceviche and even Aussie style tacos,” Mr Brown said.
“I put so much effort into this event and to see people getting out and enjoying it is so satisfying.”
