Rescue underway at Josephine Falls near Cairns

A rescue operation is underway at a popular Far North waterfall, with emergency crews responding to reports of three people stuck on a rocky ledge.

UPDATE: Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) swiftwater technicians have retrieved three people, one at a time, from the far side of Josephine Falls Creek, at about 5pm.

The trio were assessed by ambulance officers.

EARLIER: A rescue operation is underway at a popular Far North waterfall, with emergency crews responding to reports of three people stuck on a rocky ledge.

Paramedics, police and specialist swiftwater firefighters are working to retrieve three people who are trapped on rocks at Josephine Falls near Babinda.

“We were called and were advised by QFES at 4pm that three people needed rescue from the far aide of Josephine Falls,” a police spokeswoman said.

A QFES representative confirmed they were informed around 3pm that two people were marooned on rocks and unable to climb to safe ground at Josephine Falls near the intersection of Josephine Falls Rd and Price (Biggs) Rd at Bartel Frere.

“One (other) person has fallen in the water the water and the swiftwater crew will be attempting to help them out,” she said.

“Six fire crews are on scene at the moment.”

A Queensland Ambulance representative said two road ambulances were on route from Babinda.

“The rescue helicopter has not been alerted yet,” she said.

“The calls indicated that at this stage the people stuck are quite okay.”
