RECORD numbers of fashion-forward Far Northerners proved the region can hold its own in the style stakes at this year’s Cairns Amateurs Carnival.
Amateurs fashion advisor Bianca Stafford said the carnival had multiple sellout events.
Fashions on the Fields being a standout, with fierce competition, she said.
“We’ve had record numbers of women competing in fashion.
“There are people from overseas and interstate.
“Coming into spring, we had an extended winter, it’s nice to get those colours out again.”
Inside the Benson tent, men and women took to the runway to be judged for their Amateurs fashion across various categories.
Winners of the categories included Bentley Park’s Chloe Fegatilli and Brendon Soderberg for best dressed couple, Christina Croxford from Victoria for the Open Ladies Classic, Cairns’ Christine Cross for Open Ladies Contemporary and Steve Giofches from Melbourne for Open Mens.
Ms Cross was one of the Far North winners and said contemporary fashion was all about being different.
“I picked the outfit last Christmas and I was working on what to do with it, I wanted something big and bold to compliment the jumpsuit and thought it would match in the contemporary section,” she said.
“Bold, spring colours, really bright, retro.
“Contemporary is something people will stop and turn around for.”

Winning was, of course, a highlight of Ms Cross’ time at the carnival and she said the judges had a difficult job, as everyone had gone to incredible efforts to put together their outfits.
“I’m still riding on the high,” she said.
“We were the last ones to leave.”
On the opposite side of the fashion coin, Ms Croxford won classic racewear category.
As a previous runner up, Ms Croxford was excited to win this year and said she felt that classic fashion embodied clean lines, elegance, and a flattering silhouette.
She made the dress herself using fabrics that she had.
“Dress in what you love, what compliments your body shape and look to styles you’ve seen that you’ve loved and fabrics that you like,” she said.
“I thought of what Cairns was … and dressed in fabrics that match.”
