Locals sharing updates on FB groups to warn of danger

Cairns locals are sharing sightings of a crocodile at a popular swimming spot on Facebook community groups. Here’s what we know.

FAR NORTH residents have been warned to be on alert after a 1.5m long crocodile was spotted at a local swimming hole.

The croc was spotted on Sunday evening and details were promptly shared online to warn residents and tourists alike away from the popular waters of Spring Creek Mowbray, just five kilometres south east of Port Douglas.

Port Douglas resident Emily Beutel was notified of the crocodile’s presence in the waters on a local community page and proceeded to share the information and accompanying photo on Facebook group Far North Swimming Holes.

“I find this sighting really concerning as people swim there daily and locals take their dogs for a dip in the afternoons too, the fact a croc has gone so far upstream is really strange,” she said.

“I was born here and have lived five minutes from this spot for 25 years and it’s always been a great spot for a quick dip.”

“I asked the original poster of the photo for permission to share it as I was aware that Spring Creek had recently been listed on another community page as a safe spot to swim,” she said.

Police and local council have been notified of the unusual sighting.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service has been contacted for comment.
