A PATRIOTIC mix of meat pies, cold beers and sausage sizzles is about to take over the city as Cairns goes green and gold for Australia Day.
Fortunately, it does not have to cost a penny with Cairns Regional Council rolling out a suite of free events across the city on Wednesday.
Council-run events have been arranged at Trinity Beach, Tobruk Memorial Pool and Babinda Creek – and Mayor Bob Manning encouraged residents to reflect on the nation’s history.
“It is a day for Australians from all backgrounds and communities to come together to embrace our diversity, enjoy our lifestyle and celebrate our unity,” he said.
“We live in the tropics and it’s the wet season, so if it’s raining slip on a pair of thongs, grab an umbrella and embrace our tropical weather.”
The Cairns region will also welcome 60 official new Aussies on the most fitting of dates.
“There is no better day than Australia Day especially when you have my job because that means we have 60 new Australian citizens,” Cr Manning said.
The Council’s citizenship ceremony will be held at the Council’s newly refurbished civic rooms and include people from 21 different countries.
“I always look forward to citizenship ceremonies because there is no greater demonstration of how lucky we are to live in this country and the desire of thousands of others to do so,” he said.
TRINITY BEACH
There will be a free sausage sizzle, live entertainment, beach activities for the kids and live reptile interactions. The event begins from 7am to 11am at Vasey Esplanade, Trinity Beach.
BABINDA CREEK
There will be an opportunity to cool off at Babinda Rotary Park for Australia Day from 7am to 11am. There will be a free sausage sizzle and kids entertainment.
OZ PLAY AT THE REEF HOTEL CASINO
The Australia Day celebrations will go on for four days at the Reef Hotel Casino. There will be food and drink specials in the spirit of Australia, live music and four weber packages up for grabs.
HEMINGWAY’S BREWERY
There will be live music, Australian food specials and trivia. The event begins from 12pm to 10pm. The Australia Day trivia will begin at 7pm.
TOBRUK MEMORIAL POOL PARTY
There will be a free pool party at Tobruk Memorial Pool from 9am until midday after that there will be general prices. There will be free sausage sizzle, live reptile interactions, the movie Space Jam and water games.
CAZALYS
There are Australia Day festivities from 9am to 5pm at Cazalys Cairns. There will be a petting zoo and face painting from 10am to 12pm and live music by Carizzma from 12pm.
TRINITY BEACH
There will be a free sausage sizzle, live entertainment, beach activities for the kids and live reptile interactions. The event begins from 7am to 11am at Vasey Esplanade, Trinity Beach.
