A home has been evacuated on the Atherton Tablelands and vehicle fire tackled by police using a garden hose in a dramatic blaze that destroyed an early model Pajero.

Police officers from Brisbane attached to Operation Whiskey Legion helped put out the car fire in Tolga until support arrived from Queensland Fire Department.

On September 28 at officers were called to a non-suspicious vehicle fire on Tate Road and arrived to find the engulfed vehicle near a garage and house.

Police evacuated the residents including four children and used garden hoses to contain the fire and prevent it from causing further damage.

No one was injured.

Since Operation Whiskey Legion launched in the Far North on September 25, 152 people have been charged with 259 charges.

Including a 22-year-old Earlville man who police allege on Saturday stole a push bike from Cairns Central after pushing a 10-year-old off his bike with such force it caused the boy to flip over the handlebars.

The boy sustained minor injuries.

The next day on September 29, police caught up with the man in Mount Sheridan and he was taken into custody.

The man was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, stealing, and possess dangerous drugs. He was refused bail and appeared before Cairns Magistrates Court on Monday.

Roadside breath tests at Port Douglas were a priority for Whiskey Legion officers at the weekend.

During the operation so far police have conducted a total of 2747 roadside breath tests and 378 roadside drug tests.

On Friday Operation Whiskey Legion officers hosted a community engagement day, where members of the public can meet the officers and get up close to police vehicles, including buggies, motorbikes, boats and the Bearcat armoured vehicle. Far North District Officer Chief Superintendent Kevin Fitzgibbon said Operation Whiskey Legion had seen successful outcomes during the first five days of the deployment.

“The response to the vehicle fire in Tolga is an excellent example of how the additional officers during Operation Whiskey Legion are contributing to community safety,” Chief Superintendent Fitzgibbon said.

“We have arrested more than 150 people and are continuing to target offenders who pose the greatest threats to our community, and arrest high-risk offenders.”

“The community can be assured these efforts will continue beyond Operation Whiskey Legion’s deployment to the Far North.”
