A Cairns cyclist has copped a huge four-digit fine for using his mobile phone while at the handlebars.
And on the same day another cyclist got penalised for pedalling through a red light.
A 22-year-old man was slapped with a $1161 penalty for using his handheld device while cycling on Grafton St, shortly after 5pm Tuesday.
Half an hour earlier on Buchan St, a 27-year-old man received a $619 fine for riding his bike through a red light.
Cairns police have warned cyclists they need to play by the rules as much as anybody else.
“Police would like to remind cyclists that they are subject to the same rules as motorists when using roads and must adhere to all road signals,” Queensland Police said in a statement.
Although cyclists can be punished with the same fines as motorists, they cannot receive demerit point penalties.
