Cairns Amateurs takes off with fashion forward celebration
A weekend of spring fashion and trackside action has officially kicked off with a much anticipated high tea to celebrate a milestone year for the Cairns Amateurs Carnival. See the pictures.

Far North fashionistas put their best foot forward at the The Gordon’s Pink Jubilee Fashion High Tea on Thursday, kicking off a big weekend of fun, fashion and racing.
With 500 guests all dressed to the nines in the hottest trends of the season, the day was a celebration of all things bright, bold and beautiful.
High Tea organiser Pip Miller said the day was all about fashion and having fun.
“We had a competition for the guests where each table nominates their best dressed person to come up and there’s some amazing prizes,” Ms Miller said. “There are $3,000 worth of prizes on the fashions and high tea. We’ll sash the Lady of the Day, a millinery (winner) and an ambassador’s choice.”
Former Fashions of the Field winner Tina Cahill, who had been planning her outfit for the past year, said the event was a time for ladies to enjoy themselves and have fun.
“We plan the outfits probably 12 months ahead for race day. At the start of the year we start with colours, decide whether to get it custom made or designer and then make the millenery,” Mrs Cahill said.
“It’s a nice day to do something for yourself. Most of us (attending) are married and have kids so it’s great to get out, enjoy the day, support the Jockey Club and support Cairns.”
Opening day celebrations will continue at sunset with Cairns Amateurs members and VIP guests attending the President’s Cocktail Party in a warm-up to all the live action at Cannon Park for Ladies Day on Friday September 8.
The Ladies Day event will offer eight of 16 races and four of nine Fashions on the Field events before returning to the city’s waterfront for the Sapphire Ball.
The carnival concludes with Cairns Amateurs Cup Day on Saturday September 9 at Cannon Park.
