A 27-year-old woman and mother of five has died in Cairns Hospital after suffering injuries during a house fire on New Year’s Day.

A 27-year-old woman has died at Cairns Hospital overnight after sustaining injuries during a Biboohra house fire on January 1.

A woman has died in Cairns Hospital after sustaining injuries during a fire at her Biboohra home on New Year’s Day.

The 27-year-old woman fought for three days in a critical condition at Cairns Hospital, after initially being downgraded to “serious but stable”.

She is survived by her five children, all aged younger than ten, who are now in the care of their grandmother.

One of the children, a daughter, also suffered minor injuries in the fire but has since been discharged from hospital, a police spokeswoman said.

Police are currently treating the fire as not suspicious; investigations by QFES revealed the cause of the blaze to be accidental.

Two pets perished in the blaze.

Emergency services responded to the New Year’s Day tragedy shortly before 7am.

All occupants were able to exit the building but the 27-year-old woman suffered a cardiac arrest and required CPR at the scene from paramedics, who then transported her to Mareeba Hospital in a critical condition.

The woman was then transferred to Cairns Hospital. It is understood her condition was still critical at 2pm on Wednesday, January 4, but she died shortly after.
