ALL Australian packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 under new ambitious targets to be unveiled by the federal government today.
Single-use plastic packaging will also be phased out under the move, while at least 30 per cent of all packaging will need to be recyclable and 70 per cent of plastic packaging recyclable or compostable by 2025.
The move is aimed at removing untreatable waste, while Australians will also be encouraged to change their habits and ensure they are filling recycling bins correctly.

More than 50 Australian businesses have committed to the targets, including Woolworths, Officeworks, Nestlé, Blackmores, Australia Post, Unilever and Plantic.
Environment Minister Melissa Price will launch the new targets today, along with leaders from the retail, manufacturing and packaging industries.
The companies which have signed up to the program have committed to the design, manufacture and use of packaging that will help meet the targets and include the label.
There will be a new Australasian Recycling Label on products to provide consumers with an easy-to-understand guide. “The Australasian Recycling Label provides people with easy to understand recycling information when they need it most, in those few seconds when they are deciding what bin the package goes in. The label removes confusion and reduces waste,” Ms Price said.
Nestlé’s spokeswoman Margaret Stuart said customers wanted to know how to manage packaging waste.
