For Darwin Cup Carnival fashions MC Amanda Jarrett Derby Day is a day for elegance and class, and racegoers did not disappoint with their outfits.
Dressed in black and white, punters showed their class dressed in their best for another action packed day of racing at Darwin Turf Club.
“It’s one of the most heavily anticipated race days especially fashion wise because of the monochrome theme,” Ms Jarrett said.
“Everyone loves dressing up in black and white and it’s just so good to see how people interpret the day.
“The Darwin Cup Carnival is something we look forward to every single year, it puts Darwin on the back not just nationwide, but globally.”
Local fashionista Tatiana Hoffmann was among those looking to show off her outfit for one of her favourite days of the Carnival.
“Derby Day is a very classic day, very elegant, for me it’s a very Aubery Hepburn style with big hats and a splash of black and white everywhere,” Ms Hoffmann said.
“The fashion is great and we’re here for the races and to meet up with friends and have a good time.”
Meanwhile, riding in his 40th successive Darwin Cup Carnival jockey Paul Denton was the toast of Fannie Bay guiding Anphina home to a narrow Derby Day win.
The veteran horseman, combining for the second straight year with trainer and great mate Kerry Petrick to collect his third Derby win, having won his first in 1997.
After beginning evenly, Anphina took up spot seventh on the fence and just inside Century Fox while Guineas winner, Tubthumper, led early on.
The pressure went up with about 650m left to run with Nouveau Marche and Grinzinger Bishop also in the group of leaders, while Anphina stayed in the fight.
That run came just after straightening and Denton angled his mount to the outside of Tubthumper.
However, the Guineas winner fell away leaving a spring between Anphina and Grinzinger Bishop, ridden by apprentice Emma Lines, in a shootout for the line which Denton won by a head.
“She travelled extra well but I just needed some luck coming to the turn,” Denton said.
“Thankfully the gaps came, but then she stargazed over the last bit. But she’s a good staying filly, that’s for certain.”
Meanwhile, the Shelia Arnold-trained Lake’s Folly, who came fourth in the Alice Springs Cup, booked its place in the Darwin Cup with a comprehensive win in the Sitzler Buntine Handicap.
Leading trainer Gary Clarke didn’t miss out on the day with both Tiara Jewel and Yaroomba making winning runs with Jarrod Todd onboard.
The Nicole Irwin-trained Masterati continued its love affair with Fannie Bay leading throughout the Darwin Weight for Age.
While jockey Lines and trainer Phil Cole continued their great form with Vunivalu scoring a fresh-up win in the Sixt Car and Truck Rental NT Handicap.
And Heather Lehmann’s Lady Tucan stormed over the top of Clarke’s Global Thunder to take the win in the Mitty’s Racing Colours Handicap.
The Darwin Cup Carnival resumes on July 29 with the Metric Mile.
